Inline skaters find there's speed to burn

GRAEME MORTON
NEIGHBOURS

Members of the Calgary Rollercade Inline Speed Club (CRISC) prepare to blast off the starting line during a
training session at the Lloyds Recreation rink.

TTIt's just after eight on a Sunday morning.
TT Macleod Trail is virtually free of traffic as most Calgarians continue to count sheep in their well-earned weekend slumber. TTInside Lloyds Recreation rink, the disco balls aren't slowly spinning and the brightly-coloured lights aren't flashing. But the place is far from dead. A handful of athletes are counting laps, not sheep flying around the roller rink on streamlined inline skates. Some are hitting 30 kilometres an hour in top gear.
TT Meet inline speed skating, a sport that's booming in many parts of the world but that's still in its infancy here. In essence, it's short track speed skating on wheels. The black and red clad skaters are members of CRISC, the Calgary Rollercade Inline Speed Club.
TT Some skaters are as young as 12. Mike Yakey, the team captain, is a trim 50 year old.
TT "For me, it was basically a fitness think. I started inline skating outdoors when I was 40 and really fell in love with it. This sport seemed like a new challenge, to enjoy the camaraderie that comes with a team and to test myself against the international time standards."
TT CRISC coach Tyler Congdon wants to see the club's roster grow.
TT"We have enough practice time for something like 50 members. Our top athletes are practising three times a week, but it's something beginners can work their way into," said Congdon.
TT"And it's not an expensive sport to get into. All you need to start with are a decent pair of skates and a helmet."
TTAs the only inline speed skating club in Alberta with a year-round training venue, CRISC members push themselves by trying

to meet and beat national standards. One lap of Lloyds rink equals 100 meters. Complete it in the magical 12-second mark and you've hit 30 km/h. TTJessica Wedley, 16, has been a member of CRISC for two years.
TT"When I first started, my lap time was about 19 seconds. Now, my best time is about 11," says Wedley, who loves the sport.
TTYakey stresses inline speed skating can wear many hats for athletes of all ages.
TT"We welcome people who have never experienced anything more than rollerskating on a Saturday night or recreational inline skating on the paths around town," says Yakey.
TT"You'll only be expected to skate within your ability or comfort zone and improve at your own pace."
TTClub fees are reasonable too, ranging from $25 to $50 a month based on participation levels.
TT"It's still a very new sport to Canada. There are probably only about 75 competitive skaters in the entire county," adds Congdon
TT"The U.S., Columbia and Italy are clearly the three world powers now. But if you want to train seriously, there's certainly lots of possibilities down the road. Rollersports are one of the five new sports they are considering for inclusion in the 2012 Olympics."
TTAlthough primarily an indoor club, CRISC is hoping to set up an outdoor venue for summer training/racing.
TTThe club is offering one free practice session for those who'd like to try out the sport. More information is available by contacting Congdon at tyler@lloydsrollerrink.com

There has been some modification to our practice routine. Isometrics will not necessarily be at the beginning of practice anymore, but we will still do them at some point.

As a result the skater is now solely responsible for ensuring that they are properly warmed up. Jevon will lead a group warm up for those who wish to participate starting @ 8:05 am Sundays. This is not mandatory but is offered as a means of bringing the team together before practice. This warm up will focus on the Mind as well as the Body.

Speed Practice will start @ 8:30 sharp. The practice may start with Isometrics, but the drills and the order thereof is up to the coach.
