Friday October 15 - Transportation

We will be leaving from Calgary very early in the morning. If all goes to plan we should arrive in Guarne, Colombia around 10:00 P.M.

We have arrived safely in Guarne, Colombia after a delayed final flight out of Panama it took us 18 hours from meeting at the Calgary Airport to arriving at our hotel (In The Jungle). We had the World Championships coordinator meet us at the airport and they had a bus to take us to the hotel. They had these warmed ham and cheese sandwhiches for us, it was great. All our meals are supposed to be included at the hotel and if this was any indication as to how we will be eating we will be much better off then our last Colombian World Championships in Cali 2007.

Saturday October 16 - Official Track Practices

Since the official Championship transportation doesn't start till Monday we were off to the track in Taxi's for our first track practice from 9:00 - 10:00, the kids played with different types of wheels. This is definitly the most comfortable these guys have looked for a first day on the track at the World Championships. We had a second track practice from 3:00 - 4:00 this afternoon, most of the wheel testing is figured out now. We were able to run some moch 300's work the lines as well as we could with other people on the track.

Sunday October 17 - Official Track and Road Practices

Three track practices down, this morning the group skated track from 8:00 - 9:00 and are starting to look pretty confident, everyone is happy with the wheels they are on. Right now we are working at hitting top end speeds on the track. We headed back for our first road practice this afternoon from 3:00 - 4:00, unfortunately it was raining and we didn't get to skate till 4:30 and the road was still wet so we ended up skating on the track again. It turns out they liked their road wheels on the track better then they liked their track wheels.

Monday October 18 - Official Track and Road Practices

8:00 - 9:00 and five practices. Tyron was Team Canada's first and hopefully only fall, it wasn't too bad, he tore his suit up but didn't lose much skin. Our second practice ran from 3:00 - 4:00, we skated on the track and the road but a few of them are starting to get a little tight/sore/tired, might be a ligher day of skating tomorrow. On the way back to the hotel in the rain going through the jungle our bus got stuck in the mud, we were worried we would have to get out and push but the driver reversed down the hill and wound up and made a successful second attempt.

Tuesday October 19 - Official Track and Road Practices

Today we had two practices again, 9:00 - 10:00 & 3:00 - 4:00. I couldn't get on the internet at all yesterday so I was unable to post anything and now that was so long ago I don't remember much, we spend quite a bit of time skating in packs with other countries getting the kids used to skating with people who aren't in their club and to help build confidence.

Wednesday October 20 - Official Track and Road Practices

This morning we went to the track for our first practice from 10:00 - 11:00, this is our last practice that we will be sprinting at. Our guys are not used to skating twice a day every day of the week. I am heading to a meeting at 4:00 but should be back in time to join the team for their second practice of the day from 6:00 - 7:00 at this practice we will not do anything too hard. We will skate a as a pack on the road course to help loosen the legs up before our last practice tomorrow morning, then it gets real.

Thursday October 21 - Official Track Practice & Opening Ceremonies

Today I got up early to wait for a late but which took me to the track to wait for another late bus which eventually took me to Medellin for two meetings, which were scheduled with a four hour break between them so I got to go out for a nice lunch with delegates from nine or ten other enlgish speaking countries. While I was gone the kids got their last track practice in from 9:00 - 10:00, I guess it went well but I wasn't there. I made it back from Medellin to the hotel with about 20 minutes to change befor change before we left for opening ceremonies which surprise, surprise got rain again so we left early so the kids were not our in the rain the night before racing. Once we got back to the hotel Sergio showed up in time to get our breakfast and bus schedule for the next day. Tomorrow Racing!

Friday October 22nd Track Morning 9:00

Brett, Tyron and Leah all skated their 300m Time Trials this morning and just as the senior men were about to start the rain hit, so we were sent back to the hotel, Alex will run his 300m Time Trial tonight and the Junior 15,000m and Senior 10,000m races have moved straight to finals tonight. Once we got back to the track guess what, RAIN!! So we were delayed yet agian. Once skating started we were able to run through till the last three senior mens 300m Time Trial Finals before the rain returned. I guess they will finish those off in the morning. Brett took a very nasty fall in his 15,000m Elimination, he fell over another guy and landed on his face. He rolled over and wasn't moving, the medics got to him quick and I ran out on the track, for some reason unknown to us the put his arm in a sling, we never did figure it out. Brett doesn't remember falling but seems okay now, more disappointed in not getting as far as he wanted, a few pieces of skin missing, elbow, knee and hip but everything is okay Connie. By the time we finally got back to the hotel is was af after 11:30, and back at the track at 8:00 tomorrow morning to play in more rain, I mean race.

Saturday October 23rd Track Morning 9:00

Well we got through most of the morning without rain all our kids got done their sprint races for the day and just as we got to the Senior Mens 500m Semi Finals we got wet again. They just pushed those two races back to this evening we are starting ten minutes earlier then originally planned. All the longer races 10k and 15k are going straight to final so we will skate those tonight. Alex was skating a great 15k but fell eight laps in and was eliminated. We ended up getting through the evening without rain and were back at the hotel for dinner by 10:30. Tomorrow is our last day of track and then a day off before we start road. For our off day we are looking at renting a bus to take us and our translator and our police to Medellin for a day, we'll see. Since we don't have enough skaters for any relays all we have tomorrow are the Junior 500's and Senior 1,000's. Some of our skaters are a little discouraged because of the low placements but if you look at two things it makes it seem a little better. For one if you look at our times from our last banked track event, Worlds in Gijon Spain, they are almost all faster now, so we are improving. Two there are 16 less countries here than in Spain and all the strong counties are here which means there are 16 countries that we are usually in contention with or beating that are not here. All in all I am very happy with the performance so far.

Leah wanted me to mention that she had good intentions but it is too hard to keep the blog up to date and be an athlete at the same time, she will fill it in with a Worlds report once we get home. Although it did rain today, it was the first day the rain did not affect the skating schedule. We didn't have anyone in any races tonight but we still went to watch the finals, it was pretty awesome, Junior 500's Senior 1,000's and 3,000m relays, for those you who follow Joey he has two gold and two silver now. We were actually out of the track early today.

We went to Medellin today to see some historic village, which was kind of like a little Colombian Heritage Park. After that we went to a Colombian restaurant where several of us ordered steak. Some medium rare and some well done, they all came the same too well done for the medium rare people and too rare for the well done people. Finally we went to an indoor/outdoor mall, the kids really enjoyed it, I bought a tie.

Tuesday October 26th Road Morning 9:00

Today is the first day of road, they are actually skaing heats for the Junior Men 10,000m Points because even though the road course is longer then the track there are a few tight spots and they don't want so many people that it will cause crashes. Usually Canada does better on the road then the track but this is a very difficult road coarse so we'll just have to wait and see. Tonight we had rain agian, every day rain, they didn't get to the 200m Time Trial finals so I assume they will be run tomorrow.

Wednesday October 27th Road Morning 9:00

When we got to the track today, it was you guessed it, wet again. We were delayed an hour before we even started. They changed the schedule to run the 10,000m heats first so that the track would have time to dry befor the 200m Time Trial Finals. Alex actually finished his 10,000m Points heat at the front of a four person pack when they all got eliminated, which technically means he should have been the last eliminated of the four as far as placement which should have put him in 14/25 in his heat, only missing the final by one position and 28/53 overall, but instead they just grouped the four guys together and Alex ended up getting the third of those four spots plaing him 16/25 in his heat and 32/53 overall, I am mad but it costs $200USD to fight it and without proof, fighting it does nothing and although I have it on video the refs don't care to see that, because it might prove they were wrong, so technically he placed 32nd but to me he placed 28th, so that is what I will post below. Eventually we got all caught up so we are back on schedule for tonight. For some strange reason my phone, which I use as my alarm clock and scheduler is stuck at 9:38 A.M., so I will have to find an alternate was of being on time for everything. After arriving in the evening for Mackayla, Brett and Tyrons 20,000m elimination races it started pouring like crazy, although we have skated in the rain before this was still a little much for Mackayla, she fell in the first lap. Brett and Tyron faired a little better, but it's not much fun racing in the rain.

Last day of road racing and then it's just the marathon. Today it is just Senior 500's and relays, since we don't have three in any division we only had the 500's. Neither Alex or Leah made it out of their heats so tonight we will just be watching. We managed to get through the morning without rain but once we got back to the hotel it rained, still not a single day without rain. Something we ate last night made a bunch of people feel very sick today, poor Brett chose to sleep instead of eat lunch and we are sharing our hotel with Australia and they didn't even skate their relay they were feeling so bad, hopefully this doesn't last. After heading back at night to watcht the finals right after the Senior 500m finals it started raining like crazy again so they delayed the Relay finals till tomorrow morning.

We left the hotel at 8:30 this morning to get to the track by 9:00 to watch the relay finals and the weather held out, it's pouring like crazy now but it held out for the racing. After the racing was done we took both our cops and toured the town of Guarne for a couple hours, We bought doughnuts for the equivalent of 19 canadian cents. We are just at the hotel the rest of the night to relax before the marathon tomorrow morning and the banquet tomorrow night.

Saturday October 30th Marathon

This morning there were two buses to the marathon, one for the juniors and one for the seniors. That way the seniors didn't have to stand around for three and four hours before thier races. It did not rain. After the marathon we went back to the hotel for a few hours before heading to the closing ceremonies and banquet. After two long hours of Spanish speaches we got to eat a little bit of okay food, I'm glad we ate at the hotel before we went, the food here is great.
